LCR-Reader-MPA: Ultimate All-in-One Digital Multimeter

The new MPA has an all-new design, 0.1% basic accuracy, 3 test signal levels and better LED testing

After a year on the market, Siborg has updated their Multipurpose testing device and released the LCR-Reader-MPA. The new model features the same record high 0.1% basic accuracy and unrivalled features such as AC/DC voltage/current measurements, oscilloscope mode, Diode/LED tests, frequency meter, super large capacitance testing, signal generator, continuity/open testing, 100 kHz test frequency and more.

LCR-Reader-MPA combines tweezer probes with a powerful LCR/ESR-meter that is able to determine the type of component and best test parameters before measuring with a 0.1% basic accuracy. The device will display the main impedance value, any secondary values such as ESR, Q or D, component type and test parameters used instantly on a bright backlit LCD display. The 1 oz. device is very portable and ideal for fieldwork.

Wide Range of Test Features and Functions

MPA offers a wide range of test features and modes, including LED/diode tests, AC/DC voltage measurements, short/continuity testing, frequency and duty cycle measurements, signal generator, pulse counting and more. One of the most appealing features is the ability to test using 100 kHz tst frequency which allows for a 0.001 F resolution for capacitance and 0.1 nH for inductance measurements.

Large and Super Large Capacitances

A few features that set MPA apart from similar devices include: testing Large and Super Large Capacitances up to 640 mF; a wide range of test frequencies (100, 120 Hz, 1, 10 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 75 and 100 kHz). Electrolytic capacitors are measured at 120 Hertz while ESR at 100 kHz according to regular electrolytic capacitor test conditions.

Oscilloscope Mode

Siborg included an oscilloscope mode when creating the MP line; this feature has not been available since Smart Tweezers ST-1. The analog display is best used when testing voltage waveforms on active circuit boards, using frequencies up to 100 kHz. This mode is also very useful when used with LCR-Reader Kelvin Probe Connector; this allows users to use the MPA as a low-frequency probe station and test waveforms at various nodes on a PCB.

Test Signals

As for internally, MPA now offers three test signal levels: 0.1, 0.5 and 1 Vrms. Being able to test at 1 Vrms is very important for accuracy while testing ceramic capacitors. The slide switch for voltage measurements was replaced with an automatic relay switch. The signal source resistance was reduced to 100 Ohms allowing fo better accuracy while testing smaller resistances and inductances and larger capacitances. The LED test voltage was increased to 3.2 Volts.

Low Frequency Model

The LCR-Reader-MPA Low Frequency offers the same features as MPA, but with a lower range of test frequencies: 100 Hz to 10 kHz

Optional Bluetooth Module

LCR-Reader-MPA offers an Optional Bluetooth Module. The device will connect to Microsoft Windows using a low-energy consuming Bluetooth connection using a dongle. Users can record measurements in real time which can saved to be analyzed later.

LCR-Reader MPA vs MP

The most obvious difference between the models is the design; the MPA is significantly lighter at 30 grams, nearly 1.5 times lighter than the original MP. A redesign of the tweezers’ handles mean better stability and contact with components while testing. The jog-wheel navigation was replaced with a 4-way joystick navigation button. This allows users to change basic test functions directly from the home screen.

Note: LCR-Reader-MP is discontinued; limited availability on TaoBao China

LCR-Reader-MPA is available in 2 styles: Grey display or Black display. Both are back-lit LCD displays; the black display shows higher contrast while the grey display has a more illuminated background.
